6 essential apps if you are traveling to Russia
Russia has its own apps for most everyday affairs, which work better than their international counterparts. We highlight 6 of them.
  • 1
    Yandex Metro
To plan the best route from one station to another is the best option. It not only optimizes the itinerary, but even tells you which carriage to sit in based on the proximity to your arrival/departure station. It works in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
  • 2
    Yandex Maps
It is the Russian equivalent of Google Maps. The advantage is that it works much better in Russia. It allows to find addresses written in Russian and English. Tb shows the traffic in real time.
  • 3
    Yandex Taxi
It is the Russian equivalent of Uber. It eliminates any possible discomfort when having to overcome the language barrier.
  • 4
    Moscow Transport
It's another fantastic app, one that we couldn't have survived without! It allows you to build a route between any two places and gives you the best possible solution. It even gives you info about the metro stations, so you can know which metro exit to take (this is very important in Moscow).

    VPN
Facebook Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn in Russia can be accessed by installing a VPN service in advance. All these social networks are blocked in the country. That said, the use of a VPN is not prohibited by Russian law. Not all VPNs work well in Russia, so it's best to download several apps on your phone before your trip.

    Google Translate
This app works quite well when translating from English to Russian. It also allows you to speak directly and get a translation, and even take a photo of a text and translate it. Ideal for communicating with taxi drivers, asking for directions, etc.
